Dauwd - Could It Be/Shimmer

These days trudging through my emails after a long day at work has become somewhat of a chore but now and again you receive one that crops up from nowhere to pleasantly surprise you.

Last week I received an email from Alex Clap of Pictures Music with the opening line ‘Got an absolutely brilliant one for you here!’ I knew this was going to be an email worth reading. The email was to introduce me to the sounds of a little known producer named Dauwd. Not much is known about Dauwd apart from that his real name is David Hilali and he currently presides in Liverpool. What I do know is the good people at Pictures Music are offering up two tracks from the upcoming producer in exchange for nothing but your measly email address. If you are feeling generous you can ‘pay what you want’ for the two tracks which I’m sure the Pictures folk would definitely appreciate as a small token of goodwill for all their hard work introducing us to excellent artists such as Koreless, Lapalux and Dark Sky.

Bringing together the future boogie swing of Floating Points and a jittery two step Koreless vibe beautifully, Could It Be is the made for the floor track of the two, whilst Shimmer sees Dauwd flexing his ambient soothing style, reminiscent of Scotland’s own Boards of Canada. Essential listening!

There will be a vinyl release from Dauwd around August of this year via Pictures but until then listen and download to the tracks below and help spread the word!

Zomby - Natalia's Song

The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of forty thousand years....

In music these days it seems that your style and sense of fashion are sometimes more important than your actual output but there are still some producers out there that let their music do the talking, one of these producers is Zomby.

A very secretive and mysterious character Zomby has become one of the UK’s finest underground producers. Without the use of clever marketing and media buzz Zomby has gripped the world’s electronic music lovers with intrigue and talent alone. After releasing his debut rave inspired LP Where were you in 92 and several singles and EP’s such as One Foot Ahead Of The Other and the beautiful Digital Flora Zomby has finally announced the release of his latest album Dedication on 4AD Recordings. Not only has Zomby gripped the general public with his eerie productions but it also seems that his peers have taken notice of his forward thinking style with Zomby remixing the likes of Martyn and Animal Collective to name but a few.

Dedication is to be released on the 11th July 2011 but until then Zomby has offered up an incredible single in the form of Natalia’s Song which was first featured back in 2010 in a guest mix from Kode 9 and Burial for Mary Anne Hobbs’ final Radio 1 show.

Natalia’s Song is the first single to be lifted from Dedication which Zomby himself describes as ‘a dedication to someone much loved and missed’. Obviously you can tell that Zomby must have lost someone dear to him recently and just listening to 'Natalia’s Song' you can hear his sadness. Drenched in melancholy and grief the track is muffled with white noise and ambience which is wrapped around the rising chords, with the sampled female vocal only adding to the sorrow.

Natalia’s Song is available now via 4AD on a strictly limited one sided 10”.

Down at Secret Peter we love new and exciting music and we have been thinking of a way to broadcast our love of new sounds to the world and we believe we have come up with the answer; the answer is a Hidden Place.

Hidden Place is going to be a new radio show/podcast dedicated to young emerging producers from across the globe committed to the future sound of music. But for Hidden Place to work we need you to get in contact. If you are a producer or know a producer that you think we have got to hear, get in touch. We want to cover a wide variety of styles from Bass, Garage, Dubstep and Electronica. Anything that matches the Secret Peter ethos of fresh electronic vibes.

Burial - Street Halo EP

Pretty Girls Make Graves....

A few weeks ago my prayers were answered when I came home to discover the release of the new 12” between electronic music’s Holy Trinity; Four Tet, Burial and Thom Yorke collaborating on the incredible tracks Ego and Mirror. I was just coming to terms with this dream line up when a week later it was sprung on me whilst listening to Benji B’s interview with Hyperdub head honcho Kode 9 that Burial was to release his first solo EP in 4 years on Monday; it was then that I knew that there is a god.

Burial has carved out his own distinct sound, so distinct that after 10 seconds of listening to a track you can instantly recognise that it’s a Burial production, and this EP only confirms this. The wooden percussion, foggy white noise infused atmospheres and heartbreaking vocal samples are all still there but the distinct 2 step rhythms from his earlier productions seem to have been phased out.

The title track Street Halo sounds like post apocalyptic club music; with its driving mechanical beat pulsing bass line and trademark haunting vocals. The secretive producer seems to have taken house music and twisted it with his trademark murky, dystopian sound. NYC sees Burial take the pace down a notch; bringing the emotion drenched vocal to the forefront of the track to float over the beautiful yet understated atmosphere. On first listen this track didn’t really stand out for me but the more and more I listen to it the more I love it. If Burial was to produce R&B it would sound like NYC. Last up is the incredible Stolen Dog which finishes off the release beautifully. Based around a simple synth line Burial layers the track with ambience and soul that is so subtle that you almost don’t realise it’s there, it just washes over you and before you know it the EP has finished.

I cannot recommend this EP enough; since its release I can’t remember a day where I haven’t listened to it. Although I had to wait for four years I would gladly wait another four for a release as good as this.

Jacques Greene - Another Girl

No one needs a woman, like I need you....

Welcome one and all to the sounds of Jacques Greene. Jacques is a 20 year old producer based in Montreal and affiliate of the mighty Glasgow based label LuckyMe. The first time Mr. Greene appeared on the Secret Peter radar was after hearing his sublime remix of Cassie’s It Must Be Love; the young producer giving the original a laid back house groove to compliment Cassie’s R&B soaked vocal. After a bit of research we stumbled across his first 12” release, Baby (I Don’t Know What You Want) taken from the Night Slugs Allstars compilation. This is when we started to get really excited.

Then late in 2010 LuckyMe dropped his killer The Look EP; merging his love of 2-step, R&B, UK funky and deep techno Jacques unleashed 4 tracks of unadulterated party pleasure. We didn’t think that The Look could be topped but then we heard Another Girl. This track has been on heavy rotation ever since its first listen and it seems to have made quite an impression already. Nipping down to my local record store the incredible Piccadilly Records I was told that all copies of Another Girl had sold out that day with the bloke behind the counter asking “you didn’t happen to listen to Gilles Peterson’s show this week as well did you?”. So it seems taste maker and all round good egg Gilles Peterson has noticed this lad’s talent as well.

Another Girl is another heart string pulling R&B house stomp with Jacques trademark swirling synths and 2 step influenced beats, cutting and looping the vocal from Ciara’s Deuces to devastating effect. This is one of Secret Peter’s tunes of 2011 so far, no qualms.

Thom Yorke - Low End Theory

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear...

With the news breaking yesterday that Thom Yorke, Four Tet and Burial have collaborated together on a split 12" released on the 21st of March, I think every electronic music geek's prayers were answered.

Four Tet previewed both tracks during a back to back session with Floating Points on the UK's finest radio station Rinse FM from 11p.m on Tuesday night. If you have not heard these tracks seek and you shall find, you will not be dissapointed. But as this news has been done to death I am here to spread this amazing video that I found of Thom Yorke's recent DJ set at L.A's premier bass night Low End Theory. I would have traded in my own mother (sorry mum) to have been there, but this will have to do.

As if you thought Thom Yorke couldn't get any cooler. Also check out LA residents Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer absolutely loving it.
