J Dilla - Tribute Show

You're gonna need me one day, you're gonna want me back in your arms...

As I'm writing this post it's 20 minutes past midnight on the 11th February 2011. Yesterday marked 5 years since one of Hip-Hop's most prolific and iconic producers sadly passed away; his name was James Yancey a.k.a J Dilla.

To remind ourselves of what a genius Dilla was and to pay respect to this much loved artist, take a listen to Benji B's J Dilla Tribute Show recorded on BBC 1Xtra back in 2006. Benji has also kindly made this show available as a free download (just click on the arrow icon).

If you've never heard of J Dilla this is a good place to start, sit back and enjoy.

Eliphino - Tea Leaf Dancers Remix

If you want to stay then you can be here with me,
But I can't let go of all this love, oh no, so easily...

Here at Secret Peter we try to be your first port of call to find out about new and exciting music and today for your listening pleasure we bring you the next member of our “one’s to watch” list; up and coming producer Eliphino.

Eliphino a.k.a Tom Wrankmore started out DJing at the tender age of 15 and began making his own productions at the age of 17 after getting his hands on a MPC. Whilst starting out his own bedroom productions Tom became resident DJ at Leeds based clubnight Drum Major. DJing mainly Hip-Hop Tom got to ply his trade whilst rubbing shoulders with the likes of producers such as the beat conductor himself Madlib, not bad company for a young budding producer.

Fast forward a couple of years and Eliphino’s track Let Me Love You Forever was included in Gilles Peterson’s excellent Brownswood compilation series and was one of the two tracks chosen to be pressed to vinyl. He also has his own Undivided Whole EP that was released via new and exciting label Somethinksounds.

Since his days starting out experimenting with his MPC, Tom has turned his attentions away from Hip-Hop and has upped the BPM to a more dancefloor friendly tempo. Although there is still an underlying Hip-Hop influence to his productions Let Me Love You Forever is a bongo infused club banger whilst his Undivided Whole EP focuses on a more synth driven garage vibe.

The track I have chosen to showcase Eliphino’s production skills is his reworking of the Flying Lotus track Tea Leaf Dancers. With Tea Leaf Dancers being somewhat of a classic Tom understands that less is more. Sticking with a classic hip-hop beat, he brings the percussion to the front of the track whilst adding a sinister synth line that rises and falls to compliment the original beautifully. He did release this track as a free download via his twitter account @eliphinobeats so seek and you shall find...
