J Dilla Donut Shop

The man above is James Dewitt Yancey but you might know him as J Dilla

J Dilla is arguably the most influential Hip-Hop producer of all time working with everyone from De La Soul, Q Tip and Common.... to name but a few

Sadly Dilla died on February 10th 2006 aged just 32 but his music and influence on todays music is still going strong.

The legacy of his music can be felt not only in the Hip-Hop world with bands and artists such as Micachu, The XX, Mystery Jets, Joy Orbison and Darkstar all citing J Dilla as a major influence on their music.

If you are unaware of Dilla's music here is a good place to start. The lovely people at Stones Throw Records are giving away the digital version of his latest release Donut Shop absolutely free with their next newsletter.

All you have to do is log on to www.stonesthrow.com and sign up to their newsletter. It's as easy as that.

Warehouse Project 2010

If you live in the Northwest of England you probably know all about the Warehouse Project but as I'm posting this on the World Wide Web I'm gonna assume you haven't (even though no one reads this bloody blog anyway)

The Warehouse Project is a series of gigs/raves/parties put on in a large dark underground car park underneath Piccadilly train station in Manchester.

This isn't no illegal rave though, the drinks are overpriced, there's rozzers everywhere but the people behind this project have had some decent line ups in the past few years and 2010 looks like the best yet.

Jack Steadman - The Beat Maker?

I'm a big fan of Bombay Bicycle Club and feel that they are one of the few Indie bands trying to do something abit different with Indie music at the moment. With their fantastic debut I had the Blues and Shook them Loose and their recently released acoustic LP Flaws.

I was hanging 10 on the internet super highway earlier today and stumbled over a little free internet goodie I would like to share with you. Jack Steadman lead singer form BBC is giving away a batch of beats he has been creating when not with the band and they're really rather good. Its a different direction from BBC but builds on the hints of electronica shown in their debut

Check them out on the download link below

For fans of Paul White, Bibio, Bullion etc.....

Mayer Hawthorne - Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'

When I first saw this video I thought it was a fly on the wall documentary of my life but then I took a second glance and I realised it was infact the new video for Mayer Hawthorne.

Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin' is taken from his album "A Strange Arrangement" released on Stones Throw last year.

Not the best track on the album but I'm loving the old style Motown sound......

Caribou - Sun (Video)

As the English Summer has taken a turn for the worse recently I'm posting this video to try and coax the Sun back again.

This is Caribou with "Sun" taken from the album "Swim". This album is my album of the year so far and probably still will be at the end of 2010.

Take a look at the extraordinary way that the trippy girl in the video drys her pillow cases after coming out the wash..... inventive

Foals - Spanish Sahara - Deadboy remix (not the video)

As i mentioned the Mount Kimbies remix of Spanish Sahara it reminded me of another great remix by another up and coming producer, Deadboy.

More of a Dancefloor filler than the Mount Kimbie version, this remix starts with a haunting organ playing behind Yannis Philippakis whispering vocal and then this wobbly bassline comes out of nowhere finishing off with a 90's rave tinge. Enjoy

And if you haven't heard it already check out Deadboy - If you want me

Mount Kimbie - Maybes (James Blake Remix) - HFRMX006

This week sees the long anticipated arrival of Mount Kimbie's first LP "Crooks and Lovers". I have been a fan since hearing their "Maybes" EP and their deep atmospheric take on Foals "Spanish Sahara".

I've not heard the album yet but by all accounts it as amazing, not seen a score under 9/10 yet on the reviews I've seen. I think a little trip to my local record store is in order.

For now here is the part time collaborator and all round talented Mr. Blake on the remix for "Maybes". Available on Hot Flush records

Aloe Blacc - I Need a Dollar (Live in Studio)

Bringing the old style Sam Cooke/Al Green vocal to the new school Aloe Blacc with "I need a dollar"

Mountain Man - Animal Tracks (HQ)

These are the prettiest sounding blokes I've heard in a while. These three lovely ladies call themselves "Mountain Man" hence the hilarious joke.
They come from Vermount and their new album "Made the Harbor" is out on the 20th July.
